AUSTIN Tea party leaders had high hopes for a game-changing legislative session, fueled by last years election of tea party-backed state officials and lawmakers. But they were largely unrealized, with modest victories in some areas and defeat in several of their priorities on immigration and other issues.
As the House and Senate closed out their regular session Monday touting a host of accomplishments including tax cuts and beefed-up border security unhappiness within the ranks of key tea party groups was evident.
In the closing days of the session, the groups tried to push and prod their allies in the Legislature to deliver on campaign promises to crack down on those in the country illegally, reinforce the states ban on gay marriage and provide new school choice options for parents. With those bills failing, many are pledging to help staunch conservatives challenge several incumbents in next years Republican primaries.
With the condition our country is in, were in no mood for any stalling, slow walking or backtracking from Texas leaders, various tea party leaders wrote in a letter distributed around the Capitol in late May.
