Texas Senate OK’s divisive tax credit scholarship bill

Texas Senate gave preliminary approval Monday to a divisive bill designed to help thousands of public school students pay for tuition at private or religious institutions.

Sen. Larry Taylor’s Senate Bill 4 passed to engrossment on a 17-13, party line vote in the 31-member upper chamber after Republicans struck down a handful of Democratic-proposed amendments to the measure.

Sen. Kel Seliger, R-Amarillo, absent Monday following a motorcycle accident, was absent.

The bill would provide up to $100 million in tax credits to businesses that give money to a pre-approved non-profits formed to dole out the funds to public school students to help pay for tuition at alternative schools.
