525 acre park southwest of Georgetown moves closer to reality

Georgetown residents as well as visitors will enjoy Garey Park way sooner than expected.

Resident Jack Garey--who with his late wife, Cammy, had previously pledged 525 acres of land and $5 million toward the creation of the sprawling riverside park in west Georgetown, to be donated after they passed away -- surprised a full city council chamber Tuesday (4/14) by announcing he wants to "fast track" his contribution.

"When I made this deal with the city, I intended to stay in the house and live on the ranch until I died.

"After that presentation three weeks ago about all the wonderful aspects of the park, I want to be around to see people enjoying it," Mr. Garey said.

The story begins on page 1 in the top right corner under the headline "Garey's big gift moves park closer to reality," and continues on page 4. In addition to the $5 million Mr. Garey initially pledged, he has designated another $5 to $7 million to develop the park.

The park is along the San Gabriel River on the edge of the Texas Hill Country with clear water running through limestone banks and covered with cedar. The area was in my old stomping grounds when I was in college and is very scenic.

Mr. Garey and his late wife also contributed $15 million to my alma mater, Southwestern University and he is a member of the Board of Trustees.

When I was in college I used to drive through the low water crossing on the south fork of the San Gabriel River where the park will be located. At times I would open the car door and get my feet wet in the river.

In the future I would advise going towards the end of April when Georgetown has the Red Poppy festival. I'll be posting about it later this week, but if you open the link there are some pictures in the newspaper that show a field of red poppies that is stunning.

With all the rain we've been getting the creeks will be running above a few inches... Saw some vibrant patches of wild flowers up around San Antonio last week, I could imagine how the Red Poppy field would look..
