Severe drought means less water for irrigation districts

A new water fight with Mexico is about to break out due to the severe drought that has reduced the water supply from the Rio Grande Project.

Irrigation season has begun but less water in the reservoir means El Paso and Mesilla farmers will only see about a third or half of normal supply.

The amounts of the yearly water allotments from the Rio Grande Project to Mexico and U.S. irrigators are fixed by treaty, but U.S. irrigation officials say the drought may make it impossible to comply.

Because water is scarce, irrigation districts in El Paso and Doña Ana County had agreed to delay and possibly reduce this year's water releases.
