AUSTIN Greg Abbott, who frequently notes that his role as attorney general is to advocate for state laws, prompted heated debate Monday after wavering on whether he would have opposed bans on interracial marriages.
Democrats quickly criticized his response, while supporters lambasted the question and said Abbott was doing what voters expected.
The GOP candidate for governor was asked the question in an interview with the San Antonio Express-News editorial board. In light of Abbotts legal defense of the Texas ban on same-sex marriage, he was asked if he might years ago have fought to preserve the law that prohibited black and white Texans from marrying.
Abbott pointed out that such laws were overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court decades ago.
And all I can do is deal with the issues that are before me, Abbott said. The job of an attorney general is to represent and defend in court the laws of their client, which is the state Legislature, unless and until a court strikes it down.

(4,695 posts)To Abbott, laws of his clients represents laws of Abbott's choice. IMO, Abbott is really representing HIMSELF in the name of the State; he is running for a state office. Only the President has Executive privilege. Gregg Abbott as a candidate, should have stepped down from the position of Attorney General when he became a candidate for another state office.
Two years ago, a Proposition on the Nov 2012 ballot allowed for State office candidates to keep their present state office positions while lobbying in, running/campaigning for, another office.
This seems to be a violation of federal election laws on the part of Abbott.
This law allows Rick Perry to use the taxpayers of Texas to be in his lobbying position for LNG exports as well as a Governor's salary and retirement benefits while running for President (Perry has not announced yet if he will run for President again). This law allows Greg Abbott to be a State AG and to represent him in the Courts as a candidate. Voter suppression has been struck down in other states by the Supreme Court, except in Texas, State Law has superseded federal election laws, in my opinion. What day did Texas secede from the Union on? The day of the last voter rights appeal by candidate Greg Abbott, using his position of State Attorney General .

(4,695 posts)saying that women may not vote without proving their legal name at the voting booth; no affidavits accepted? Keep in mind that the State has been providing aliases for years. Following current decisions on voter ID, all courts said that the law could proceed until after the election. Is this the next step past gerrymandering for Republicans and the conservative Supreme Court of 5 Royalists? Could this happen, in next Presidential election in Texas and in other states? Texas has several Tea Party Republicans that are so extreme. Look for more removal of out right to vote, coming soon.
I believe Texas Women will elect Hillary Clinton and the down ticket Texas Blues. Republicans will be desperate to keep Texas Red.
