Statewide Human Trafficking Summit Held at Del Mar College

CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII News) - About 500 people gathered at Del Mar College to help draft a new law on human trafficking.

Last year, State Representative Todd Hunter drafted legislation signed by the governor to create new human trafficking laws in Texas.

"What we learn today, what we gather today, what we develop today, it will be used in the hearings the rest of the year. To set up the laws for next year. Our goal is to have very good human trafficking laws and make Texas the model for the rest of the United States," says State Rep. Hunter.

Hunter says human trafficking is different than the smuggling of illegal immigrants. It's forced slavery and prostitution, mostly of women and children. The average age of the victim they say, is between 11 and 22-years old.
