f you follow politics fairly regularly, youve probably heard of the fact-checking website Politifact. While not always perfect, I would say theyre pretty fair in their findings. Though I will say that sometimes theyre too literal in their conclusions. By that I mean Ive seen them rate statements as True or False, simply based on technicalities of the comment that they were researching.
But thats not really a big deal. For the most part they do great work.
Well, it seems Texas Senator Ted Cruz isnt a fan. Shocking, I know.
While Cruz was discussing the broken promise made by President Obama when he told Americans that they would be able to keep their old health insurance plan (which was only true for 95% of Americans), he said:

2013 Winner President Obama with "If you like your health care plan, you can keep it" In 2009 and 2012 this was rated Half True based on the original statement "If you're one of the more than 250 million Americans who already have health insurance, you will keep your health insurance." When the 02% of plans that failed the most basic of regulations had to be replaced; The administration poorly chose to double down and compounded the generalization into an outright lie.

(9,118 posts)Ted Cruz got elected Senator because the Texas GOP's right wing was organized, motivated, and went to the polls and voted.
Unfortunately, in November, centrist Texans (And I include what used to be moderate conservatives back when Daddy Bush was President) as well as progressives were all too often apathetic and didn't even bother to go to the polls. Add to that too many Texans' two decades-long bad habit of reflexively voting Republican and you get people like Louie Gohmert and Ted Cruz getting elected.
I personally think that one of the ways Progressives and Centrists could make a comeback in Texas would be through a little basic political education. Too many Democratic ads look like someone has forgotten to include very basic political ideas like "vote your interests," "your vote counts," "the other guy's vote cancels out yours if you don't vote," and even the more cynical "you get what you vote for, and if you don't vote, you get their agenda, not yours."
If middle-class and shirt-sleeve Texans remembered to vote for their interests, the Texas GOP would be out in a political wilderness that (I hope) would last longer than the 12 Tribes' trip from Egypt to Canaan.
