Gov. Rick Perry, who has avoided any comments on a grand jury investigation into coercion and misuse of office, said Tuesday that he did not personally make phone calls or initiate a deal to push Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg from office.
Last June, Perry acknowledged that he wanted Lehmberg to resign and said he would veto $3.7 million in funding to the state Public Integrity Unit run by her office if she did not.
Lehmberg had just pleaded guilty to drunk driving, served a 45-day sentence and been through a rehabilitation program. She had said she would not resign, but would also not seek re-election.
Perry claimed she had lost public confidence and should not be overseeing the integrity unit that investigates wrongdoing by public officials and state agencies. At the time, the unit was probing potential misuse of public money at an agency closely aligned with Perry.

Well of course he didn't have any direct involvement because he is too lazy to do so. It's much easier to order the minions to do the dirty work so it gives him the plausibility of denial.

(112,417 posts)Perry wanted her removed so that he could appoint a Republican crony to the position because the Travis County DA is head of the Public Integrity Unit (PIU)--the only significant force in Texas not lead by Republicans. The PIU is investigating the state cancer research agency (CPRIT) since Perry and the attorney general, Abbott, have awarded millions in contracts to CPRIT researchers that did not provide proper documentation.
