Would Abbott take fights with feds into governor’s office?
AUSTIN Only one Texan has more aggressively and publicly confronted federal officials than Gov. Rick Perry the man who wants the office next.
Greg Abbott has fired off letters on his attorney general letterhead to federal officials even when his office had only tangential legal standing in the matters.
Most recently, he pledged a blistering lawsuit against the Bureau of Land Management, which has begun a four-year land management study of 90,000 acres along the Red River.
In TV interviews, the Republican nominee told federal officials that if they wanted land along the Red River, they would have to come and take it, invoking the taunt of Texians to the Mexican army in the battle of Gonzales even though the history of federal claim to the land is long and has been confirmed in past court cases.
