Texas Dems to Perry: “Don’t Mess With Texas Women”
HOUSTON—A big red bus plastered with a giant sign blasting Gov. Rick Perry has been rolling along Texas highways delivering a message Democrats hope will help them in the coming elections.
“Don’t mess with Texas women!” chanted demonstrators gathered near the bus parked outside the Houston headquarters of Planned Parenthood.
The Houston rally was the latest stop on a statewide tour through 16 cities. The hastily organized series of demonstrations is riding a wave of controversies over contraception – even Rush Limbaugh has craw fished away from an especially bombastic statement – that Democrats believe will work to their advantage. Suddenly Texas Democrats, dispirited by their losses in the 2010 elections, think they’ve found a wedge issue against Republicans.
“Whether you have a mother, a sister, a daughter, this is something that affects everyone,” said Cindy Bartos, a Planned Parenthood supporter who showed up with an anti-Perry sign. “And I think the Republicans are trying to set everybody back fifty years.”
