Brazos County suspends roadside herbicide program as complaints mount

Brazos County is indefinitely suspending its herbicide program after residents complained that the EPA-approved chemical damaged trees along county roads, forcing them to be trimmed.

County Judge Duane Peters on Friday said he'd seen the damage himself and was disappointed. He was, however, reluctant to say whether the program would be curtailed completely when the commissioners discuss it at an upcoming meeting.

"Our concern is sight distances and safety," Peters said, adding that County Engineer R. Alan Munger "makes a decent case why it's good to do chemical mowing."

College Station resident Francis DeGelia said it's hard for her to see any positive reasoning through the forest of "slaughtered trees."
