Economy improving, but risks remain, Geithner says during Dallas visit
DALLAS - The U.S. economy is improving slowly and gradually, but risks remain, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said Thursday in a meeting with the Dallas Regional Chamber.
Economic conditions are improving broadly, if not in all sectors, Geithner said, adding that the gains from the severely depressed levels following the financial collapse of 2008-2009 are promising.
"We're in a much better position than I thought we would be by this time," said Geithner, the top economic policy-maker in President Barack Obama's administration.
The biggest risk the U.S. now faces, Geithner said, is the bitter, partisan gridlock in a Congress that, in the last 18 months or so, has been unable to agree on federal budgets, tax cuts or any other significant economic policy matter.
