Houston Islamic school’s rejection from TAPPS resurfaces
A Houston Islamic academy was denied membership to the Texas Association of Private and Parochial School after being grilled about the Koran and the mosque located at Ground Zero.
Iman Academy applied for membership to TAPPS in 2010, but the association denied the schools request. After being rejected two years ago, Principal Cindy Steffens did not go public with the story, but The New York Times uncovered the Houston academys name last week and ran an article about the controversy.
Steffens said the apparent prejudice against Muslims was disheartening.
Im not here to convince them. Its about our children and our generation, she said. You know whats really scary if this is what we are teaching in our private schools. This is a board representing private schools in Texas. Is this how the majority of private schools think?
