When Steve Stockman made the surprise move to announce his candidacy for the Senate seat of John Cornyn, few people saw it coming. Stockman served as the first House member for Congressional District 36 after its creation following the 2010 Census when Texas gained 4 seats. Stockmans decision to challenge the long time Senator leaves behind the only open congressional seat in Texas.
Congressional District 36 is a large swathe of land that covers the easternmost portion of Harris County, stretching out to Orange County, and up to the northernmost parts of Polk and Newton counties. What is unique about this district is that it also contains NASA within its borders. The Johnson Space Center contributes about 20,000 jobs to the local economy and whoever prevails in the race for Stockmans old seat will be responsible for representing this crucial community in Congress.
Its almost a given that with the demographic patterns at play and the districts voter profile, that whoever wins the Republican primary will win the general election in November. Essentially, whoever wins the Republican primary is going to be tasked with advocating for NASA.
Did you hear that Tea Party voters? Whoever wins the Republican primary will need to represent NASA and that means fighting for the programs, and yes, spending, that sustain it.

(5,811 posts)If either of the two GOP domestic terrorists wins a seat in the US House that says more about the people that voted for them than the two domestic terrorists running for the seat. These individuals hate the gov't, are trying to overthrow the gov't and the good citizens of this district are either too stupid or hateful to see it. The results of the 2014 midterms should remove all GOP house members because they have been trying to overthrow our gov't while on the federal payroll at $175,000 a year, federal healthcare, a gym, staff and travel expenses. Domestic terrorists belong under a rock somewhere deep deep in the woods. They certainly do not belong in the US House or Senate.

(29,414 posts)Back then, it didn't seem nearly as conservative as it is now, and I'm always thankful I moved into the city and away from those sterile suburbs.
So, hopefully, there's still enough intelligent people left there that work either directly for NASA or for one of the many contractors that understands this point. Stockman won't be the one that would support NASA, and if he wins, he'll likely discover that he won't win the next election.
Honestly, I don't know how he's stayed in politics in Texas all these years. I knew he was a nutcase decades ago, and has only managed to get crazier as the years went by. I guess he found a way of devolving his constituencies in the same manner...

(53,661 posts)Saw it at DU then. He was and is an engineer and must be all set up.
I believe that so much of the space program is now in private hands that they figure they will get theirs from that and every one of us who paid taxes to make the space industry what it today, can just go FOAD.
He was totally for Cruz and all of that. Big TP patriot. No, I don't have the link and have to call it a night, but it was here.
So the conventional wisdom that people in that area won't bite the hand that fed them all these years is no longer true.
I'm sad to see the area go that way, but I know the region a long time back, from when it was first built, and a lot of the employees and their kids that I knew were from DFW and hated living in Houston.
Did that mean they were more conservative? I don't know, but they fit the type. Just there for the bucks and always wanted to go back to their former lives. There were also a lot of people from many parts of the country and I always felt over the next decades that a lot of the out of state emigrants were very conservative, as they didn't like the liberalism of Houston.

(4,695 posts)year after shutting down the Fed Government last year, 2013. How many crazy Texans are agreeable with shutting down the US and having their creditors confiscate and/or hold their savings and deposit accounts money?
Even the RW extremist's, FreeRepubic web site, seemed neutral between Texas TEA Cruz and the GOP on the debt ceiling expansion. Conclusion, many Texans are willing to destroy the economy and their lives to support Ted Cruz. (60% of people live from paycheck to paycheck.) It shines a light on the meaning of, Texas Crazies. I agree: Getting all Texans out to vote, is the key.

How did Cornyn vote on the debt ceiling issue?
The debt ceiling issue comes up again in 2015. The whole world stands on the brink of disaster again with Ted Cruz pushing for the shut down of the American Government.
