Texas House education committee told to study school cheating

AUSTIN – Texas House Speaker Joe Straus on Friday gave legislators their homework for 2014 and an investigation of school cheating such as what happened in El Paso is among the assignments.

Straus, R-San Antonio, released the first round of instructions, or "charges" to House committees. They now will hold hearings and gather information that might be used to craft bills for the legislative session that begins in January 2015.

An investigation of the El Paso Independent School District over the past three years revealed that administrators schemed to keep students from taking 10th grade accountability tests - in some cases by kicking them out of school.

The scandal also showed that the Texas Education Agency, which now is under different leadership, only reluctantly investigated allegations of cheating.
