BRAC is back: Congress members representing Texas oppose idea of more closings

Should another Base Realignment and Closure session come to pass, it will surprise several of those who represent Abilene in Congress.

U.S. Rep. Mac Thornberry, vice chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, said he flat-out does not think it will happen.

"There is widespread opposition in both parties on both sides of the Capitol to another round of BRAC," he said. "Part of the reason is that the last round was in 2005, and (the U.S. Government Accountability Office) says that we will not break even until 2018."

To Thornberry that means "we are gong to spend more money for 13 years to close and clean up and build new construction as result of that (2005's) BRAC before we save one dime," meaning a call for another round so soon is simply something that "we can't afford."

The linked article also includes commentary from Senators Hutchinson and Cornyn. Hutchinson stated, "It is simply premature to assess our requirements for domestic installations until we have made cuts in the large number of overseas bases."
