Governor could acquiesce to loss of emergency powers
Gov. Bill Lee appears willing to give up some executive authority during a state of emergency as lawmakers prepare to make a move to cut into his office’s power.
The governor said this week he supports the Legislature reviewing executive powers to determine whether changes should be made.
An ad hoc committee studying the governor’s authority is considering recommending the Legislature stop the state’s governor – whoever might be in the seat – from making executive orders after a certain period during a prolonged state of emergency.
Tennessee has been in an emergency since early March, and some lawmakers are growing “nervous” over the governor’s ability to continuing making executive orders without legislative oversight.
