3 SC sheriff's deputies made 5 prank calls falsely reporting dead bodies while on duty. charged and fired

Five phone calls reporting a dead body were made either to a convenience store or to police Feb. 4 in the small towns of Cheraw, Chesterfield, McBee and Pageland, which are all in Chesterfield County, investigators said.

In each case officers and other emergency workers responded until it was determined the reports were not true, the warrants said.

Investigators did not say why the phone calls were made or release any additional details.

Reichard, Roseau, and Loflin were booked at the Chesterfield County Detention Center. Court records did not indicate if the deputies had lawyers to speak on their behalf.

Three Chesterfield County sheriff’s deputies have been charged after allegedly making hoax calls about a dead body, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

On Monday, SLED charged First Sgt. Justin Tyler Reichard, 28, Sgt. Darien Myles Roseau, 25, and Deputy Killian Daniel Loflin, 26, with misconduct in office, criminal conspiracy, and aggravated breach of peace.

The three deputies were terminated, said Chesterfield County Sheriff Cambo Streater.

Warrants released by SLED accuse the three deputies of calling convenience stores and municipal law enforcement agencies in Cheraw, Chesterfield, McBee and Pageland to report a dead body on Feb. 4. The deputies were on duty at the time, according to the warrants.

All four towns are in the area of Chesterfield County. Law enforcement and emergency services responded to the calls but discovered that there were no bodies.

“On Feb. 4, 2024…First Sgt. Justin Tyler Reichard, Sgt. Darien Roseau, and Deputy Killian Daniel Loflin did conspire to commit the offense of Misconduct in Office, to wit: While on duty, deputies knowingly reported five hoax emergencies within the municipalities of Cheraw, Chesterfield, McBee and Pageland. These hoax reports were telephoned to convenience stores or the respective municipal law enforcement agency and notified the call recipient of the location of a “dead body” within the municipalities. The hoax calls caused emergency responses from law enforcement and/or other emergency responders,” SLED Agent Ashley D. Anderson wrote in the warrants.

No examination of hiring practices or judgments, department culture, leadership or supervision required. Move along now...

county. Not sure how these yahoos got through the academy or hired in the first place, but the labor pool there is pretty shallow (45,000 county population). It is in the 'forgotten" part of the state, not close to the mountains, not convenient to the coast, away from population centers (relatively close to Charlotte, but not as desirable as other nearby counties with Interstate access) and borders the Corridor of Shame. South Carolina has a lot of growth opportunities and rising living standards, but the Sand Hills are outside that growth.
