Harrisburg teachers resign after being hit, kicked and bitten by students
The teachers of Harrisburg are under attack.
The Harrisburg teachers’ union said months of complaints about violence in the classroom and a lack of response from district administration finally led to the resignation of several teachers already this school year.
Teachers at a school board meeting Monday told tales of being hit, kicked or bitten by students in the classroom as the Harrisburg Education Association called for the formation of a task force comprised of teachers, administrators and parents to help students who display violent behaviors.
“There is a problem with discipline issues in some of the buildings and teachers have tried to get a dialogue going with the administration, and it has not been going in the right direction,” said Lauri Lebo, a regional spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania State Education Association.
The education association said at least 45 teachers have resigned since the beginning of the school year. While both union and district officials have stressed that not all of those resignations were not due to student disciplinary problems, the teachers’ union expressed similar concerns to district leadership in January, said Jody Barksdale, president of the Harrisburg Education Association.
