Ukrainian imposter who posed as Harrisburg High student gets federal prison for fraud
A federal judge Thursday morning ordered a Ukrainian man who posed as a Harrisburg High School student to spend 2 months in prison for passport and Social Security fraud.
The penalty U.S. Middle District Senior Judge Sylvia H. Rambo levied on Artur Samarin was less than the 3-month jail term Assistant U.S. Attorney Darryl F. Bloom suggested. It was also less lenient than the punishment sought by Adam Klein, the attorney for the 23-year-old Samarin.
For one thing, Rambo ordered Samarin to serve his federal sentence consecutively to any penalty Dauphin County Judge Deborah E. Curcillo imposes when she sentences him for his larger fraud next week.
Samarin, who masqueraded as teenager Asher Potts to attend Harrisburg High, pleaded guilty to the federal charges in August. Investigators said he used his fake name and posed as a U.S. citizen to try to secure a U.S. passport and lied on Social Security documents.
