Downsizing of Pittsburgh International Airport being considered

Built as a hub for US Airways, now part of American Airlines, the terminal currently has 75 gates. Ms. Cassotis estimated as many as 25 of them routinely go unused — fallout from the decision to close the (US Airways) hub in 2004.
Only those gates the authority does not believe it would need over the next five to 10 years would be considered for demolition.
“We will always be able to accommodate the number of aircraft that serve this market and should serve this market, and we always will be able to accommodate growth. There’s no question about that,” Ms. Cassotis said.
Even if the airport were to keep all the gates — just in case there’s a big spike to flights in five or 10 years — it would do little good.
Because the gates are so old, they would be unable to handle current aircraft without big overhauls.
