Downsizing of Pittsburgh International Airport being considered
Christina Cassotis, ... the CEO of the Allegheny County Airport Authority is ... considering the idea of demolishing unused gates at Pittsburgh International.
We have 8.2 million passengers a year in a facility built for 35 million. There are parts of the day that it feels empty,
Built as a hub for US Airways, now part of American Airlines, the terminal currently has 75 gates. Ms. Cassotis estimated as many as 25 of them routinely go unused fallout from the decision to close the (US Airways) hub in 2004.
Only those gates the authority does not believe it would need over the next five to 10 years would be considered for demolition.
We will always be able to accommodate the number of aircraft that serve this market and should serve this market, and we always will be able to accommodate growth. Theres no question about that, Ms. Cassotis said.
Even if the airport were to keep all the gates just in case theres a big spike to flights in five or 10 years it would do little good.
Because the gates are so old, they would be unable to handle current aircraft without big overhauls.
