Francis Acosta resigns as Reading City Council president; fellow members respond

READING, Pa. - Francis Acosta, pleading guilty to a federal charge of conspiracy to commit bribery offenses, resigned his position as president of Reading City Council on Wednesday.

Acosta, 39, assumed the leadership role in January 2012 after council's then-president, Vaughn Spencer, resigned to become the city's mayor.

Acosta joined council two years earlier as a representative of Reading's first district.

In response to Acosta's resignation, his former colleagues released the following statement:
