Medical marijuana is about to occupy a curious legal status in Pennsylvania. Under a new bill, patients would only be able receive it in a restricted form for a pre-approved list of conditions, regardless of what the doctor thinks is best. A poll by Quinnipiac University poll shows that voters in the state back legalizing marijuana for medical purposes by a ratio of 6-1.
The new bill would severely restrict the number of patients who can access medical marijuana by not making “severe or debilitating pain” a condition for which the drug is legal to treat, according to the Marijuana Policy Project.

Ironically, chronic pain is among the conditions medical marijuana has been studied against and proven to be an effective treatment.
The bill adds insult to injury by attempting to legislate the mechanism of delivery along with the approved conditions. Under the proposed law, individuals may not even “utilize a vaporizer to ingest or inhale cannabis.” The proposed legal definition of medical marijuana includes only “extracted oil, edible products, ointments and tinctures.” So if you have cancer and want a tincture, Pennsylvania legislators will help you out. Otherwise, you may be out of luck.
