http://www.keystonepolitics.com/2014/03/three-key-points-kathleen-kanes-decision-shut-probe-philly-dems/The whole piece is worth reading. Excerpts:
"Kathleen Kane is probing Finas botched handling of the Sandusky case, and the Corbett team is anxiously awaiting the release of that report. The release of the Sandusky report will of course be one of the major events in the 2014 race for Governor, and the Fina and Corbett people have been encouraging the view that it would somehow be inappropriate to release the report during election season. Heaven forbid Tom Corbett be held accountable for the performance of his prior elected office.
...The Inky article simply doesnt have the goods on any link between gifts and votes. A Democrat doesnt need a Tiffany bracelet to be persuaded to vote against Voter ID!
Did the sting Kane cancelled catch some Philly Democrats doing stupid things? Theres no question about it. Did it catch anyone doing illegal things? Well, you have non-disclosure of gifts, which Adam Bonin has been pointing out is a misdemeanor. And he also notes theres no legal limit on the gifts politicians (or their spouses) can accept from lobbyists. They just have to be disclosed, and there cant be a quid pro quo a connection that the Inky article emphatically does not make."
----
The Repubs are trying to compare this attempted sting to Abscam. In Abscam, the politicians took $50,000 in cash in a briefcase, not a necklace. In Abscam, the politicians were specifically told they needed to introduce an act of Congress to benefit the donor. In this case, the politicians were asked to vote against the VoterID law - which everyone knew they were going to vote against anyway.
I wonder if this poorly planned sting was also an attempt to force through the VoterID law at the time, and to discredit its critics. "After all - look at the people who voted against our Voter ID law - they are all corrupt."

Let's all agree that any Pa. politician who neglected to meet requirements to publicly report a gift should be prosecuted. We can start with Corbett.

Marsico said the investigation had been inactive for some time and the informant said he would not meet with him.
"Now, there were recordings also, but if we have an informant who is getting some serious charges dismissed, who also wouldn't talk to us, that basically left us with nothing to go on," Marsico said."

If this was such a great case, why didn't the Republican Attorneys General file charges before she was elected? It was stale by the time Kane took office.

Frank Fina, the brains behind the 3 year long Sandusky investigation and braceletgate, now works for the Phila. District Attorney's office. Fina was Corbett's chief deputy as AG. Fina is now Kane's chief public critic, and may have been the "anonymous" source for the Phila. Inquirer article.
One person asked an obvious question to Fina: If you think this braceletgate is such a great criminal case, then go ahead and file charges. The Phila District Attorney's office has the primary jurisdiction on these matters. The PA. AG is mainly brought in when there is a conflict of interest.
Or a more basic question to Frank - why didn't you prosecute the case when you were Chief Deputy Attorney General for PA? Why did you leave a poorly thought-out case, with a single star prosecution witness who then refused to cooperate with any prosecutors, for your successor to deal with? Why did you agree to drop all of the many serious criminal charges against your star prosecution witness - so that he had no motivation to testify on this case?
After all, Frank, you were in charge of all public corruption cases in PA. from 2006 until a year ago.

Also, Franky, how did you manage to let the two Penn State administrators think that Penn State's attorney was representing their interests when they were being initially questioned by Corbett's office of attorney general. There were even questions raised at that hearing about who was representing who. Then you and your comrades had that very same Penn State attorney serve as a star prosecution witness against them?
Many attorneys think that cover-up case will fall apart because of that rookie mistake. Then, you wouldn't even let those Penn State administrators see copies of their own testimony.
http://onwardstate.com/2014/02/20/attorneys-claim-judge-deputy-attorney-general-treated-spanier-curley-and-schultz-unfairly-during-grand-jury/
Excerpt:
"The criticisms stem from the controversial role former Penn State General Counsel Cynthia Baldwin played in the proceedings as Penn State officials Spanier, Curley and Schultz believed she was their attorney. At the same time, Baldwin told Feudale that she was solely representing the universitys interests, according to transcripts.
Spaniers attorneys argue that if Baldwin was representing the university, not the administrators individually, then Feudale and Fina acted improperly by allowing Baldwin to sit in during Spaniers grand jury testimony as well as participate during the proceeding.
Additionally, if Baldwin was indeed representing the university, not the men individually, attorneys say Feudale and Fina should have clarified that with Spanier when he stated during his testimony that Baldwin was his attorney. Going further, attorneys say that if Baldwin was representing the university and not Spanier, then Feudale and Fina wrongly allowed Spanier to testify without legal representation."

Here's more on Fina and his two fellow refuges from Corbett's AG office who now work for the Phila. Attorney General's office.

"Fina, Blessington, and Costanzo were the same team that followed Corbett's instructions to leave his close political allies in the State Senate Republican Caucus untouched in the bonusgate investigations as Charlie Thompson from the Patriot News outlined last year (Patriot News 2/27/13). In fact, these three supposed corruption busters actually turned away the tipster who eventually brought down State Senator Jane Orie and Supreme Court Justice Joan Orie Melvin (2/21/13).
They ignored a referal from the Pennsylvania State Ethics Commission that found former Republican State Representative Matt Wright from Bucks County guilty of using his taxpayer funded legislative staff for the exact same purposes as the bonusgate defendants. Instead Fina, Costanzo, and Blessington followed Corbett's orders and ignored the referral because of strong connections in the case between Wright and the powerful Deon family (Inquirer 1/30/10).
Fina, Costanzo, and Blessington were found by the Patriot News and the ACLU to have no problem helping Tom Corbett's nascent gubernatorial campaign by egregiously abusing the state grand jury system to silence political opponents (Patriot News 5/25/10)
Worst of all is the unfolding scandal surrounding Fina's role in slow-walking the Jerry Sandusky investigation to avoid negative repercussions for Corbett's campaign for governor. As post-indictment riots attested the repercussions of the child molestation indictment proved quite harmful to the vaunted Penn State football brand and consequently quite unpopular. In fact, Fina and Costanzo were both still at the OAG when Corbett's replacement made the politically expedient decision to delete millions of emails. Both men stood by and allowed their destruction. (Pittsburgh Tribune Review 2/14/14)"

Interesting case of musical chairs. Fina and two top members of Corbett's AG staff moved over the Phila. District Attorney's Office. Meanwhile, Corbett's daughter switched places from the Phila. District Attorney's office to the AG's office right before Kane took office. She suddenly started using her married name when she went to work for the state. Then her husband (a Phila. narcotics cop) was charged with criminal corruption.

I'm not an attorney, so please forgive me or correct me if I got some of the details wrong. However, there certainly seems to be a pattern.
For more info, read the last few years of posts on http://casablancapa.blogspot.com. This is the blogger that Corbett's AG staff tried to unmask using a secret statewide grand jury. They had that grand jury approve a subpeona to Twitter requiring that Twitter reveal his identify. Twitter was ordered to not tell anyone that they received the subpeona. Fortunately, the execs of Twitter laughed at Corbett's office and went public with the story, and never revealed the blogger's name.

(1,562 posts)Today's Allentown Morning Call online edition has reprinted a follow-up from The Philadelphia Inquirer. It has, of course, a very Republican slant. In addition, The Morning Call is not allowing comments on this piece to prevent people like JP Zenger from pulling it apart. Thanks, JPZ, for giving us detailed info not found in the corporate media.

(6,819 posts)Scroll down into the depths of the article and you will see:
"Within hours of Kane's inaugural, technicians on her staff went into Fina's office - after hours - and removed the hard drive from his computer, according to sources. Fina was in his last week on the job when the removal took place. Kane's aides apparently were looking for information related to Fina's work on the Sandusky case."

Maybe this explains how they were able to recover emails that the Corbettites thought they had permanently erased from the server. I'm guessing Fina is very scared of what is about to break about the Corbett-Fina Sandusky investigation.

Kane also noted that Fina and his comrades granted immunity to the informant and dropped 2,000 criminal charges against him. After those charges were dropped, that informant refused to cooperate with any of the prosecutors. Another rookie mistake.
