Our illustrious Governor is flying to the Vatican, with the Archbishop of Philadelphia.

They are hoping to convince the Pope to attend a conference in Philadelphia. I'm sure Corbett is also hoping that he will get some photographs of himself standing next to the popular Pope this month. After all, PA has a huge number of Catholic voters, and Pope Francis is also popular with many non-Catholics.
In my dreams, I imagine the Pope turning to Corbett and saying:
"Human rights are not only violated by repression, but also by unfair economic structures that creates huge inequalities, such as your cuts to urban public schools and your attempts to cut off poor people from food stamps and to keep them from obtaining health care. Now, get the hell out of this Temple, you moneychanger."

Here's some actual Pope Francis quotes:
Human rights are not only violated by terrorism, repression or assassination, but also by unfair economic structures that creates huge inequalities.
Every man, every woman who has to take up the service of government, must ask themselves two questions: 'Do I love my people in order to serve them better? Am I humble and do I listen to everybody, to diverse opinions in order to choose the best path?' If you don't ask those questions, your governance will not be good.
We have to work harder to develop a profound theology of women within the church. The feminine genius is needed wherever we make important decisions.
Since many of you do not belong to the Catholic Church and others are non-believers, from the bottom of my heart I give this silent blessing to each and every one of you, respecting the conscience of each one of you but knowing that each one of you is a child of God.
Wretched are those who are vindictive and spiteful.
We need to avoid the spiritual sickness of a church that is wrapped up in its own world: when a church becomes like this, it grows sick.
Politics is a noble activity. We should revalue it, practice it with vocation and a dedication that requires testimony, martyrdom, that is to die for the common good.
Inconsistency on the part of pastors and the faithful between what they say and what they do, between word and manner of life, is undermining the Church's credibility.
It makes me sad when I find sisters who aren't joyful. They might smile, but with just a smile they could be flight attendants!

(6,819 posts)One of the irritating thing to New Jersey Catholics is that the estate they are enlarging as a retirement home for the Newark bishop is no where near Newark. It is a country retreat on multiple acres in a rural part of New Jersey. The dioceses in other parts of the state are trying to convince their donors that they have nothing to do with it, because they are fearful of reduced donations.
