New license plates available for decorated military personnel, veterans

I just got this email from my state legislator and have some thoughts on it.

Members and veterans of the United States military who were decorated for valor or meritorious service during armed conflict can now display their medal through new license plates offered by PennDOT.

PennDOT’s new series of plates offers a design exhibiting the Distinguished Service Cross, Distinguished Flying Cross, Navy Cross, Air Force Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star for Valor and Bronze Star military decorations.

Legislation I supported, Act 103 of 2012, allows PennDOT to offer these license plates.

The license plate for recipients of a Silver Star, Bronze Star for Valor, Distinguished Flying Cross, Navy Cross or Air Force Cross costs $10, plus the annual registration fee. The license plate for recipients of a Bronze Star costs $20, plus the annual registration fee.

PennDOT’s Specialty Plate Program also offers a variety of license plates honoring those who served in our armed forces. Complete details about all military license plates offered by PennDOT are available by clicking here.

This is the "click here" site:

I think that this is a good idea, and I do understand why the law passed without a single "no" vote, since who would vote no on this. But I was surprised to see that they have an additional charge above the registration fee. I find this offensive. Was there no one to point out that this was bullshit?
