Shankweiler's Drive-In to host 90th 'birthday extravaganza'

The country’s oldest drive-in theater, located in Lehigh County, is getting ready to celebrate a significant milestone.

Shankweiler’s Drive-In Theatre, at 4540 Shankweiler Road in North Whitehall Township, will hold its 90th anniversary celebration beginning at 5 p.m. on April 13.

The “birthday extravaganza” will feature a re-enactment display of the drive-in's earliest days, along with family friendly activities, themed drinks and other festivities, according to an event description.

Shankweiler’s has underwent several changes over the decades, including the installation of speaker poles and car speakers in 1948, the introduction of AM and FM radio micro-vicinity broadcasting in the 1980s and the installation of a state-of-the-art digital Barco Alchemy Cinema projector in 2013.

1. I remember going to drive-in movies as a kid.

Particularly Goldfinger in 1964, with a bunch of my buddies.
Later on in college we went to a drive in when we were double dating. We snuck 2 of
us in in the trunk...don't remember what the movie was about, too busy.
