Oley Valley School District parts ways with Red Cross
OLEY, Pa. – The Oley Valley School District Board of Directors rescinded a contract with the American National Red Cross on Wednesday night. The vote was 5-4.
The agreement, between the district and the Pennsylvania Rivers Chapter of the American Red Cross, involves service at two district facilities: Oley Valley High School and Oley Valley Middle School. In the agreement, the school district allowed the Red Cross to use and occupy the facilities on a temporary basis to conduct emergency and disaster activities.
Prior to the vote, Director Mary Harris said, "After listening to the Red Cross presentation, I thought a compelling argument was made. But after filtering through more information and trying to be objective, I found that there are points of concern."
Harris said given the nature of the facilities dealing with children and the "current climate of controversy, border security and illegal immigration, I find best to error on the side of caution."
The director alleged that the Red Cross is "facilitating illegal immigration to the U.S., providing maps and information about traveling to the southern border" from Central America.
"The International Red Cross may be well intentioned, but it is facilitating illegal immigration into the United States and help traffic illegal aliens throughout the heartland," Harris claimed. "It is exasperating the flow of migrants to the border and endangering the lives of those involved."
Harris said any decision must "safeguard and protect the community."
