Former East Carnegie fire chief charged with theft of $90K, forgery

The former fire chief for the East Carnegie Volunteer Fire Department in Scott Township was charged on Wednesday with stealing nearly $90,000 from the fire department and Scott Township fire district, as well as six counts of forgery, according to the Allegheny County District Attorney's office.

Adam Kauer, the former fire chief, surrendered to detectives Wednesday and was released on recognizance after being arraigned. His first court hearing is scheduled for May 21.

An affidavit, filed by district attorney Detective Kevin Flanigan, alleges that Mr. Kauer stole over $84,000 from the fire department between 2012 and 2019.

Roughly $59,000 is alleged to have been stolen by requesting reimbursements for purchases of clothing, equipment or other categories. In reality, the money appears to have been used for “personal benefit and not for the benefit of the fire department,” including rent payments, restaurant visits, a car payment, payments related to a home purchase, a Royal Caribbean Cruise and a trip to Florida that included a visit to Disney World, according to the affidavit.
