State slaps fine on Pittsburgh nursing home for veterans

The Southwestern Veterans Center nursing home has been fined $15,250 by the Pennsylvania Department of Health for neglect of a patient who developed a serious pressure ulcer wound last year.

A new posting on the Health Department’s list of sanctions shows the fine was imposed Jan. 10, based on an inspection at the nursing home in Lincoln-Lemington on July 12 last year. The 236-bed facility is operated by the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.

An inspection report indicated a resident who had impairments, including bowel problems, in his lower body was left with a bed pan beneath him for two days without necessary repositioning to prevent sores. He was also not properly monitored with his catheter cleaned as needed, the report stated, and a severe wound developed in his buttocks.

In its written response to the findings, Southwestern Veterans Center stated that its nursing staff would be re-educated on repositioning and related patient-care issues, with more stringent procedures to verify sufficient monitoring of residents who are at-risk for pressure ulcers — commonly known as bedsores — or similar injuries.
