Reading Eagle files for bankruptcy protection, seeks buyer

The family-owned company that has published the Reading Eagle newspaper for more than 150 years has filed for bankruptcy protection.

The company, which also includes Reading-based WEEU 830 AM and weekly newspaper South Schuylkill News, made the announcement Wednesday afternoon, saying that it will continue its normal operations as it seeks a buyer.

"Our employees have worked very hard to support our company and our community," said Peter D. Barbey, the company's president and chief executive officer. "The family is incredibly grateful."

The company, which has 236 full-time and 20 part-time employees, said it has already met with several potential buyers over the past few months.
