Oklahoma House Bill 1063 derailed, would allow armed teachers in public schools

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- The chairman of the Senate Education Committee says he doesn't plan to grant a hearing to a bill that would give school districts the option of allowing armed teachers in public school classrooms.

<snip> This week is the deadline for the bill to be granted a Senate committee hearing. The bill could still be reassigned to another committee, but Ford says he doesn't expect that will happen.

The bill would have allowed teachers who receive a certain level of training to carry firearms into schools, if the district voted to endorse such a policy. It passed the House 68-23.

Sanity in Oklahoma? Guns in schools sounds like an incredibly bad idea to me. With larger class sizes, it's hard for even the very best teacher to know what every student is doing every second, and putting a gun someplace where the kids absolutely couldn't get to it will cost precious seconds when it's needed, eliminating any supposed "benefit" of having one in the classroom.

What we need is better security in the schools, as well as better paid teachers and staff, along with decent benefits.
