Hi, I am wondering if anyone can help me. A neighbor moved and left their adult male cat behind. He is a beautiful and loving cat but we cannot keep him. I have Multiple Sclerosis and balance issues. The cat is dangerous to me. He has tripped me several times so we have to get rid of him. We have asked everyone we know and asked those people to spread the word but no one wants a cat. I do not want to take him to a kill shelter but every no-kill shelter I have contacted is not accepting cats at this time.
Can anyone give me some advice? Does anyone want a cat or does anyone know of a no-kill shelter that is accepting cats at this time? I live in Johnston County but am willing to travel to find him a good home. We are desperate.
Thanks for your help.
ETA: Does anyone know someone that works at a shelter? It's very frustrating because none of the shelters are calling me back and I have to keep calling and calling and get voice mail 99% of the time. I wish the different places would at least have the courtesy of calling for 1 minute to tell me they cannot take the cat so I could mark the places off my list. I'm at the end of my rope. The cat tripped me again when I was trying to feed him yesterday. I'm afraid I'm going to get seriously hurt and I don't have insurance.

(185 posts)I was hoping to find a place where there was some sort of screening but may post on Craigslist if there are no other alternatives. Unfortunately, Johnston County has a bad feral cat problem right now that shelters are trying to take care of so there is an abundance of cats for people that want one.
Thanks for the idea.

(2,978 posts)I thought Second Chance accepted kitties like this. It's where I got my rescue kitty (had her 10 years and we're going strong.)

(185 posts)Unfortunately, he's not even fixed. We are going to have to do that as well if we can find somewhere reasonable. We just had a major plumbing leak so it's not really in the budget. This is just a bad situation all around.
I will double check to see if Second Chance is one of the ones I've already called. Thanks.

(185 posts)I believe they were one of the ones I contacted that had a message that they were no longer accepting cats, but I will double check to make sure. Thanks.

(185 posts)Hi, I double-checked today. They have a message that the shelter is full and the wait-list is closed due to the high volume of strays. Thanks again.

From the web page:
The Goathouse Refuge is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, no-kill animal sanctuary dedicated to providing cage-free care for cats regardless of age, medical issues or disposition until a permanent loving adoptive home can be found. Visiting Hours: Noon to 3:30 pm, every day of the year 680 Alton Alston Road, Pittsboro, NC 27312 919-542-6815
Please take the kitty here; he will have wonderful care until he is adopted or forever whichever
happens.

Do not advertise on Craigs List. You could attract someone who would sell the cat to a lab or
with other devious intentions especially near Halloween.
A no-kill shelter is a much better outcome for the cat.

(185 posts)Hi, that was my concern about Craigslist. I left a message for The Goathouse Refuge and explained the situation. Maybe they can help me out. Thanks so much for the information.

(185 posts)They cannot take him but said I could send photographs and try to get him adopted. Unfortunately, I don't think I can wait that long if they have over 300 cats to get adopted.
Thanks again for the suggestion. Maybe I'll get lucky.

(5,081 posts)They were featured in the NYT's in January and on the morning shows,
only increased their numbers. Please keep looking for another no-kill
shelter.
We adopted an older kitty from a no-kill shelter several years ago. He has
made a wonderful companion animal. There are many who would take
your darling guy; it is just a matter of making the right connection.
Thank you for caring to find a home for this sweetie. How anyone can
abandon their animals this way I will never ever understand.
