NY AG Eric Schneiderman: Airbnb making half its cash by running illegal hotels

State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said he believes more than half the revenue that the popular home sharing website Airbnb makes in New York is through the running of illegal hotels.

Speaking at the Crain’s New York Business breakfast Thursday, Schneiderman said he is investigating the online site in order to protect the city’s hotel industry, apartment dwellers, and the tourists who book rooms through Airbnb.

I thought the whole premise of sites like airbnb was to find people who were reckless enough to let total strangers crash in their guest rooms on the cheap? Sounds to me like established hotels are ticked off that they're seeing occupancy rates drop.
