Stringer hints at independence from de Blasio

Sally Goldenberg

In February, after Bill de Blasio called to inquire about the arrest of a politically connected bishop, the mayor’s allies in city government rallied to his defense, and tried to help him quell the ensuing controversy.

Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito told the press it was "time to move on," and Public Advocate Letitia James said she would "defer to the decision of the mayor."

Scott Stringer was not as deferential.

“I think the rule is the mayor shouldn't be involved in any way about somebody’s arrest," the comptroller told an impromptu scrum of reporters outside City Hall.
