Asked about liberal unrest, Cuomo points to the Senate

Laura Nahmias

ALBANY—Gov. Andrew Cuomo defended his record as a progressive on Wednesday, a day after a poll showed that a liberal challenger could attract significant support in the fall gubernatorial race.

“I don’t know that there’s a lot of space to my left, you know?” Cuomo said, when asked to comment on reports that the Working Families Party might run a more left-leaning candidate against him.

A Siena poll published Tuesday showed a third party candidate could capture 24 percent of the total vote in a three-way race against Cuomo and Republican candidate Rob Astorino. The poll showed 46 percent of New Yorkers consider Cuomo a moderate, rather than a liberal. Most also believe he works as a pragmatic Democrat, rather than a partisan one.

That poll has emboldened some restive members of the W.F.P., who are considering endorsing someone other than Cuomo at their May party convention.
