City Pushes State To Nix Budget Language Barring Rental Assistance For Homeless Families

ERIN DURKIN
Mayor de Blasio has yet another fight on his hands with Gov. Cuomo - administration officials are waging a last ditch fight to get language removed from the state budget that bars the city from using state aid for rental assistance for homeless families.

Department of Homeless Services officials plan to travel to Albany with City Council members and advocates Tuesday to lobby for an end to the prohibition, DHS Commissioner Gilbert Taylor said at a Council hearing Monday.

Taylor said the move is key to the city’s effort to reduce the ballooning homeless shelter population.

“There’s no magic bullet that we have, which is one of the reasons why we are so aggressively interested in wanting to have the language removed,” he said. “The city can’t do it by itself.”
