Area counties to request grant extensions to maintain new voting machines

Mary Perham
BATH — With federal election reform funds expiring this month, area officials are applying for extensions though 2016.

The federal grant, known as “shoebox” funds, is designed to enable counties to continue voter education and maintain the electronic voting machines in place at polling places since 2009.

The extension will allow Chemung County to use the $250,000 it has left from the original grant, with the possibility of additional funds, according to county Board of Elections Democratic Commissioner Keith Osborne.
