Two weeks to deadline, NY insurance enrollment rising

Claire Hughes

Enrollment in the state’s health insurance exchange, NY State of Health, has surpassed 666,000 people as of Tuesday, according to the state Health Department. Nearly 1 million people have completed applications through the website, signaling their intent to shop for plans.

It’s tempting to say the enrollment figure is devilishly high, but we’re far too highbrow for that.

Enrollees are about evenly split as to whether they qualified for coverage through the government-sponsored Medicaid program (339,377), or enrolled in private health plans (327,020).

The state has seen healthy enrollment figures since the NY State of Health website was launched in October to meet the requirements of the Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare. The federal law requires most Americans to have health insurance or pay a penalty.
