An Unexpected Gun Debate Shoots Down State Sen. Greg Ball's Voter Registration Bill
BY GLENN BLAIN
The state Senate's plan for an easy get-away-day session were thwarted Thursday by an unepexted gun rights debate that erupted on the floor of the chamber.
It began over legislation sponsored by Sen. Greg Ball (R-Putnam County) that would allow people to register to vote when they submit hunting and fishing licenses - including the ones they submit at thousands ar sporting goods stores around the state.
Sen. Brad Hoylman of Mannattan and other Democrats charged that Ball's bill was intended to boost voter registration among gun owners. Hoylman described the bill as the The NRA Voter Assistance Act.
Other Democrats questioned whether it was proper to give sporting goods outlets like Walmart and Dick's Sporting Goods, which already forward hunting and fishing license applications to the state Department of Environmental Conservation, the ability to handle voter registration applications.
