NY’s Obamacare site hits half-million enrollments

Claire Hughes

More than a half-million New Yorkers have enrolled in health insurance plans through the state’s online insurance market, NY State of Health, as of 9 a.m. Tuesday, according to the state Health Department.

The figure puts the state on track to meet or exceed its goal of enrolling 1.1 million residents in insurance through the website by the end of 2016, state health officials said.

Of the total 501,205 people enrolled, the state said 276,681 chose private insurance plans, while 224,524 qualified for coverage under Medicaid, the government-sponsored health insurance program for low-income Americans.

Seventy percent of enrollees did not have health insurance when they applied through NY State of Health, according to the Health Department.
