Gov. Cuomo Knocks de Blasio's Pre-K Tax For Sending Wrong Message To Taxpayers

Gov. Cuomo says Mayor de Blasio’s plans for prekindergarten and a tax hike on the wealthy send the “opposite” message to taxpayers from what his administration has been trying to do.
Cuomo appeared on the Fox Business Network Tuesday morning and said the state has been working to reverse the “flight from New York” of taxpayers who no longer can afford to remain in the state.
“We are very much aware that we are in a competitive environment and I believe fully that there is a tipping point, where if you charge a family, an individual too much in taxes, they will say I can’t afford to stay here.,” Cuomo told host Maria Bartiromo.
While de Blasio has called for a new tax to fund universal pre-K in the city, Cuomo has proposed spending $1.5 billion over the next five years to create a statewide program. He’s also said he’s willing to give districts a “blank check” to fund their programs.
“I believe the better course is let the state pay for it since it is a statewide initiative and the state has the funds so that we don’t have to raise taxes, because we have been trying to send the opposite signal for the past three years,” Cuomo said.
