Katz's Famous Deli Celebrates 125 Years
A city icon in its own tasty right, Katz's Deli this weekend will celebrate 125 years of serving up pastrami, corned beef, brisket and more on the Lower East Side. The fifth generation family owned business has been in the same location on the corner of Houston and Ludlow Street since 1888.
With many restaurants having come and gone in the area, Katz's owners say the sandwiches and other offerings are some of the many factors to its longevity.
"Tradition, nostalgia. You come in and all the sights and the sounds and the smells are all exactly the same as you remember when you were a kid and your first came in to Katz's and then of course it's the atmosphere. This is pretty one-of-a-kind and it's a special place. It's always vibrant," said Owner Jake Dell.
The restaurant will be celebrating the anniversary all weekend, including a Shabbat dinner tonight, visits from celebrity chefs and a pastrami eating contest Sunday.Katz's says it sells up to 20,000 pounds of meat a week.
