Sheldon Silver Hits 20 Years As Speaker

BY KEN LOVETT

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver hit a milestone today--20 years as leader of his house.

"Twenty years, but it seems more like twenty minutes," Silver said in a statement to the News. "I feel as energized today as I did back then, and I am honored to serve with members on both sides of the aisle."

Since he rose to power, Silver has worked with five governors, three New York City mayors, three state comptrollers, five attorney generals, and five different Senate majority leaders (depending on how you count them).

Silver has had his ups (carrying the Democratic and progressive banners during 12 years of Republican Gov. George Pataki) and downs (sex scandals that have rocked the chamber).
