Eric Schneiderman Gets Backing In Fight With Gov. Cuomo Over Mortgage Settlement Funds

BY KEN LOVETT

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman got some backing from a coalition of community housing groups in his battle with Gov. Cuomo over who should control more than $600 million in foreclosure settlement money the state is receiving as part of a settlement with JP Morgan Chase.

The coalition, which includes Home Defenders League and New York Communities For Change, said Schneiderman should be able to use the money to help people who have lost their homes rather than have it put into the state general fund, like Cuomo is seeking.

"It's scandalous that Governor Cuomo wants to take money earmarked to help families stay in homes and use it to offset tax cuts for banks, especially as we celebrate MLK Day,” said Jaron Benjamin, executive director of the Met Council on Housing. “Black and Latino families were hit hardest by the foreclosure crisis, and JP Morgan Chase Bank owes these communities for its reckless behavior."
