NYCLU has high hopes for de Blasio's first 100 days
By MATTHEW DONDIEGO
The New York Civil Liberties Union has created a list of suggested priorities for incoming New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio's first 100 days in office, challenging the mayor-elect to "close the book on New York's tale of two cities."
The agenda tasks de Blasio, a Democrat, with appointing a police commissioner sensitive to all New Yorkers rights; appointing a progressive school chancellor; committing to enforce city policies taking racial impact into consideration; providing municipal ID cards for undocumented immigrants; directing city agencies to operate with more transparency; and ending command and control police responses to peaceful protests.
"We compiled the 100 days agenda for the de Blasio administration because New York City has become a symbol of inequality and inequity," said Donna Lieberman, executive director of the NYCLU. "But by making a few key actions as soon as he takes office, the new mayor can immediately help our city become a place where everyone's basic rights and liberties are protected and promoted."
The NYCLU says achieving this list would "restore New York City to a place where the rights and liberties of all people are protected and promoted by adopting a series of reforms that address issues of race, policing, education, immigrants' rights, government accountability and the First Amendment."
