Brooklyn service for man whose ashes were missing in the mail

Eyewitness News

DITMAS PARK (WABC) -- Family and friends are gathering in Brooklyn Saturday to say goodbye to a loved one, after his ashes that had been lost in the mail were recovered.

The ashes were placed in the mail in Virginia, but after days of waiting the family started to think they were lost.

"My brother was lost in the system is all I knew," Bridget Smith said

Smith's brother, Eugene died in Virginia last month. Bridget had the urn, but no ashes for Eugene because their father's girlfriend had mailed his ashes from Lawrenceville and, on November 8th, upon the advice from her post office she mailed it by registered mail.
