DEC extends public comment period on LNG facilities
By Matthew Dondiego
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has announced the public will have an additional month to weigh in on the state proposition to allow liquefied natural gas facilities in New York.
A comment period for state residents on the proposed facilities was originally scheduled to end on Nov. 4 less than a week away before the DEC pushed back the deadline until Dec. 4.
If approved, it would be the first time liquefied natural gas facilities were allowed in the state since the 1973 industrial disaster on Staten Island, when an LNG exploded, blowing the roof of the concrete gas tank and killing 40 workers. A moratorium on such facilities would remain in place for New York City.
The DEC says approving the proposal would allow for "statewide regulations that implement safe siting, operating and transportation requirements for Liquefied Natural Gas."
