Police say they have arrested three 19-year-old males, charging one with a hate crime, in connection to an arson at a Staten Island convent over the weekend.
Sources tell NY1 the trio were using the convent on the grounds of St. Joseph Hill Academy as a place to smoke and drink early Saturday morning.
It was there that police say Vincent Calder intentionally set the fire.
He now faces multiple charges including arson, criminal mischief and trespassing, all as hate crimes.

(30,777 posts)Maybe the statues were ordinary vandalism?
I don't want to see hate crime laws misused and cheapened. If that doesn't apply in this case, the accused could get off more lightly than they possibly deserve.
People need to be punished severely for hate crimes, when the law applies.

I completely understand your point and it is a good one. They have confessions so I think pleas will likely come from this.
