De Blasio hopeful Cuomo will support tax proposal

By MATTHEW DONDIEGO

October 07, 2013
New York City mayoral hopeful Bill de Blasio is optimistic Gov. Andrew Cuomo will support his key campaign proposal — a tax increase on the city's wealthiest residents to fund all day universal pre-K.

De Blasio, the Democratic nominee who won last month's primary in a landslide, has been met with harsh criticism from skeptics who believe the proposed tax hike is "dead on arrival" in Albany, where the state Legislature and Cuomo are facing re-election next year.

However, the would-be-mayor believes the support of city residents — a recent Wall Street Journal/NBC 4 New York/Marist poll found 53 percent of voters want universal pre-K funded through the tax — may be enough to pressure the governor and state lawmakers.

"My conversations with Gov. Cuomo have been very broad. He's expressed openness to this specific proposal," de Blasio told The Associated Press. "And I think there is going to be a lot of public support and that is going to make a huge difference."

Cuomo won't risk alienating the Wall Streeters and Upper West Siders who fund his political ambitions.
